A special initiative is quietly transforming lives in Cambodia\u2019s capital. TeacherTech \u2013 a self-funded charity project \u2013 is bridging the digital divide by providing technology access and digital literacy to Cambodia\u2019s underprivileged children. This grassroots effort is as much about education as community empowerment. We sat down with founders David and Adjani to find out more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From IT Services to Community Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

“TeacherTech started as an IT company focusing on providing affordable and prompt IT support to anybody employed by the education sector,” explains David. However, the impact of COVID-19 shifted their focus. They launched the TeacherTech 4 Kids Project<\/strong> in Tuol Sambour, which provided English classes, basic IT access, cooking lessons, and life skills training to 35 local children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project grew to include initiatives like road maintenance and installing solar lighting in Tuol Sambour. Recognizing the growing need for digital access, TeacherTech relocated its IT services to Phnom Penh. \u201cPhnom Penh has many underprivileged children without computer access for education due to poverty,\u201d says David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their new focus, the TeacherTech Computers 4 Kidz Project<\/strong>, provides free computer-building classes, digital literacy training, and refurbished computers to children from low-income families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Empowering Through Technology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis year, we had our first batch of computer-building class graduates, and it was great to see that they took ownership of the computers they built themselves,\u201d shares Adjani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, a second group of students is enrolled, and the project has expanded to include digital literacy programs. Looking ahead, TeacherTech aims to incorporate AI training to prepare students for the challenges of the fourth industrial revolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe dream is to empower impoverished Cambodian children through technology by providing access to computers and digital learning resources,\u201d David explains. \u201cWe want to enhance educational opportunities, foster creativity, and promote digital literacy among underserved communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making a Difference<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

TeacherTech\u2019s approach is unique. \u201cWe provide free computer-building classes, free digital literacy classes, and give away refurbished computers to deserving Khmer kids in low-income families,\u201d says David.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They handle everything from sourcing computer parts to delivering them. A dedicated driver collects donated goods and We (David, translator and me) would go to the village to teach the kids since it was difficult for us to get students in the city centre to commit to a time. We partnered with HOPE International Cambodia to gather the students who wanted to learn. They provide the facility for us, while a translator ensures course materials are accessible to everyone. Support from partners like Box Office, which provides Sunday lunches for students during their main class break, makes the program even more impactful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Donating your old laptop may have a much greater impact than you realize,” Adjani reflects. “Providing a laptop to a disadvantaged child has the power to significantly transform their entire future for the better. While it may just be an old laptop to you, for a child trapped in poverty, it could be akin to receiving Willy Wonka’s golden ticket.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sustainability and Social Impact<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

TeacherTech stands out for its commitment to sustainable e-waste management. By refurbishing and repurposing old technology, the project reduces electronic waste while giving children valuable tools for learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe emphasize hands-on learning by teaching underprivileged children to build their own computers,\u201d says David. \u201cThis empowers them with practical skills and a deeper understanding of technology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building a Brighter Future<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

TeacherTech\u2019s impact on Cambodia extends beyond technology. \u201cThe one who plants trees, under whose shade they know they will never sit, has at least begun to understand life,\u201d says Adjani, reflecting on their motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For David and Adjani, this project is deeply personal. \u201cThis country has been our home for years. We wanted to give back to the people who adopted us into their country. But we do need your help since this is a two-person charity,\u201d David says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
